Marriage, Between, same, difference, civil, unions

What is the difference between civil unions and same sex marriage?

I am confused by Proposition 8 in California. It just says that state does not recognize same sex marriage. But Civil unions are recognized so aren't the same rights that are bestowed to a married couple applied to a civil union couple? Is the debate bascially just being able to say "you're married" (semantic argument?)

A marriage is recognized by the church of the couple. A civil union is recognized by the state. Yes, the same rights apply.
